Kia Sportage: Front Suspension System / Front Strut Assembly Repair procedures
| 1. |
Remove wheel nuts, wheel and tire (A) from hub.
Tightening torque:
107.9 - 127.5 N·m (11.0 - 13.0 kgf·m, 79.6 - 94.0 lb·ft)

Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the wheel
& tire.
| 2. |
Remove the stabilizer link nut (A).
Tightening torque:
98.0 - 117.6 N·m (10.0 - 12.0 kgf·m, 72.3 - 86.7 lb·ft)

| 3. |
Remove the wheel speed sensor (A) and brake hose bracket bolt (B).
Tightening torque:
A : 8.8 - 13.7 N·m (0.9 - 1.4 kgf·m, 6.5 - 10.1 lb·ft)
B : 6.8 - 10.7 N·m (0.7 - 1.1 kgf·m, 5.0 - 7.9 lb·ft)

| 4. |
Loosen the strut mounting bolts (B) and then remove the hub and knuckle
assembly from the strut assembly (A).
Tightening torque:
137.3 - 156.9 N·m (14.0 - 16.0 kgf·m, 101.3 - 115.7 lb·ft)

| 5. |
Remove the cowl top cover.
(Refer to Body (Interior and Exterior) - "Cowl Top Cover")
| 6. |
Loosen the mounting nuts (A) and then remove the strut assembly.
Tightening torque:
53.9 - 73.5 N·m (5.5 - 7.5 kgf·m, 39.8 - 54.2 lb·ft)

| 7. |
Install in the reverse order of removal.
| 1. |
Remove the insulator cap (A).

| 2. |
Using a strut spring compressor, compress the coil spring (A).
| •
To prevent peeling the paint of coil spring, cover the
coil spring with a thin cloth or hose before installing
strut spring compressor.
| •
Set the compression position of strut spring compressor
correctly for coil spring not to slant when compressing
the coil spring.
| 3. |
Remove the self-locking nut (C) from the strut assembly (B).

| 4. |
Remove the insulator, spring seat, coil spring and dust cover from the
strut assembly.
| 1. |
Check the strut insulator for wear or damage.
| 2. |
Check rubber parts for damage or deterioration.
| 3. |
Compress and extend the piston rod (A) and check that there is no abnormal
resistance or unusual sound during operation.

Disposal
| 1. |
Fully extend the piston rod.
| 2. |
Drill a hole on the A section to remove gas from the cylinder.

| 1. |
Install the spring lower pad (D) so that the protrusions (A) fit in
the holes (C) in the spring lower seat (B).

| 2. |
Compress coil spring using a strut spring compressor. Install compressed
coil spring into shock absorber.
| a. |
Indicated identification color marks on the coil spring.
Pay attention to identification mark and then install
them.
| b. |
Install the coil spring with the identification mark
directed toward the knuckle.

| 3. |
After fully extending the piston rod, install the spring upper seat
and insulator assembly.
| 4. |
After seating the upper and lower ends of the coil spring (A) in the
upper and lower spring seat grooves (B) correctly, tighten new self-locking
nut temporarily.

| 5. |
Remove the strut spring compressor.
| 6. |
Tighten the self-locking nut to the specified torque.
